Atlar'd Lament: Part One - Neo Smyrna

Altar’d Lament is a multi-disciplinary art installation and performance project by the Masonik arts collective that explores the rise, fall and rise again of the early 1900’s musical style known as Rebetika – an underground form of music comprised of both near-Eastern and Western influences that was eventually banned and its performers persecuted.

The Altar’d Lament project involves the development of a series of audio-visual multi-medium artworks, presented as a narrative concerning the evolution, development and controversial censorship of the Rebetika musical style. Through this narrative, Masonik seek to encourage audiences to consider the paradox that a cultural form can be simultaneously fragile and resilient, both comforting and threatening.

The Neo Smyrna exhibition is the first creative series to emerge from the project, and introduces its audience to the controversial origins of the music, and to the historical figures who performed it, through a series of recordings and physical objects representing facets of the lives of those who were its greatest icons, re-interpreted through contemporary media so that they can return, in a fashion, to life.

ENOCHIAN LATHE PROCESS

Masonik's major work inspired by Aleister Crowley's wax cylinder recordings

A very special release from Perth based collective, MASONIK straddling the media of film, sound and sculpture. Inspired by resampling the wax cylinder recordings of Aleister Crowley created in the early 1900s, Masonik have created a work which echoes the regenerative and destructive sides of the magical artistic process.

Each work comprises a cut vinyl disc containing the 15min soundscape, a blue ray disc containing the 15min film component, the sculptural housing and limited edition publication.

Each vinyl is cut, not pressed, and each sculptural case is created entirely by hand, embossed, editioned and sigilised. This work is at the forefront of new media, cleverly crossing the boundaries of fine art, film, music and performance in a way rarely done.

Only 7 editions have been created for the international market.
